Gaalipata is a 2008 Kannada film directed by Yograj Bhat. The film was largely comprised of the Mungaaru Male team, especially among the actors. It released in Karnataka in mid-January, and it retained it's spot as one of the big hits of 2008.
The plot of Gaalipata follows three friends Ganesh/Gani (Ganesh), Digant/Digi (Digant) and Kitty (Rajesh Krishnan). One fine night the three decide they've had enough of living in Bangalore and go on a holiday to Digi's grandfather's estate in Mugilupete. They meet interesting characters straight away - beginning with a manservant of Digi's grandpa (Dayal), who Gani calls Dracula, grandpa's friend Kodanda (Anant Nag), a great hunter of his time. He's been relegated to the wheelchair since his accident when trying to hunt a wild boar. He lives with his wife Padma (Padmaja Rao) and three daughters - Sowmya (Daisy Bopanna), who teaches Kannada to kids, the agriculturist Radha (Neetu) and the childish and bubbly Pavani (Bhavana Rao).
Kodanda, who takes a liking to the guys instantly, tells them of his life's ambition - to hunt the boar that caused his accident. Gani, who wants to eat the boar's tail, hatches a scheme to hunt the boar without Kodanda's wife realizing any of it. They execute the plan well enough, however the boar gets the better of them. And the return to the estate doesn't work well either, Padma finds out they have been hunting and severely criticizes them for it. In the mean time, Gani is attracted to the silent Sowmya. He finds out that she's really Kodanda's daughter-in-law and a widow since her husband of four hours drowned in a nearby waterfall trying to rescue a child. To try and impress her, he enrolls himself in her Kannada class. Pavani, is attracted to the other silent person Kitty and tries to find out more about him from Gani. And Digant and Radha share a love-hate relationship.
The wild boar is still on everyone's mind and all of them head out once more to hunt it, planning it slightly better this time. But when it's time to shoot the boar, Kodanda shoots Digant instead. Digant is unharmed but for a slight wound - and Radha is chosen to be his nurse for a while. Digant likes Radha and though he gets ample support from Gani in the form of useless advice, he is scared to tell her. Kitty and Pavani become a pair. After seeing them together and armed with more useless advice from Gani, Digant finally works up the courage to tell Radha that he likes her. Radha admits that she too likes him, but she's engaged to another man. Gani helps them out by brokering their engagement with Kodanda. The men go out to hunt the boar once more, this time they are more successful, the boar is cornered. But Kodanda doesn't shoot it, and he stands on his feet for the first time since his accident. He declares that the boar has taught him a lesson and he will never shoot an animal again.
Gani plays love guru to the other two pairs, but is unable to tell Sowmya about his feelings for her. He writes that he likes her on a gaalipata, which he hopes she will read, but the thread holding it cuts and it flies away before she can read it. He writes her a poem next, but never gives it to her. In the mean time, Pavani finds out about Kitty's failed love affair and is unhappy that he didn't tell her. Kitty, who is close to Sowmya, asks for her help. Sowmya convinces Pavani that Kitty is true to her, and Pavani agrees to give Kitty another chance. Pavani also lets her parents know about her and Kitty, and Kodanda agrees to the match. Gani is depressed that his love story is going nowhere, and tells Dracula about it. Dracula finds the gaalipata and gives it to Sowmya. Sowmya reads it, and when Gani proposes to her, she refuses. Gani is suicidal at this point, and Digant and Kitty ask Gani's parents (Rangayana Raghu and Sudha Belawadi) to intervene.
Gani's parents try their best to convince Sowmya, but to no avail. She later takes up a job opportunity at Switzerland, and decides to leave. Gani also decides to leave Mugilupete. They agree to be civil to each other and leave together. Gani wants to bid a farewell to the kids he's studied with, Sowmya wants to do the same. They need to cross the river to get to the kids. While in the raft, Gani pours out his feelings one last time. Sowmya who truly likes Gani, but so far has pushed it away, says that she likes him too. The raft they are travelling in runs into rapids because Gani has been careless, and it overturns. Gani saves Sowmya from drowning, but threatens to push her into the waterfall if she says she won't marry him. Sowmya says she won't, and the film has a happy ending.
